Another sign of summer
I heard the first Tibicen chloromera cicada calls this week. I remember the first time Donna heard them last summer, and she didn't know what was making that noise, guessing it was some kind of electric short. It wasn't until then that I realized that California doesn't have them, and growing up in Pennsylvania I just took them for granted as one of the background noises of summer.

Actually, it was in Ohio when I first heard them. In fact, at one of the lovely municipal rose gardens that Columbus has around town. Columbus is really good with the public gardens! I liked that.

The sound of cicadas immediately throws me back to summers in Japan. The sound is so ubiquitous that you still think you can hear it for a week after the cicadas have all died and dried up.

Mmm, summer.
